Mackinac Island, Michigan
The same ferries that waked us yesterday were our transportation over to the island today. It was a quick 16 minutes trip! Mackinac Island, pronounced the same as Mackinaw, covers 3.8 square miles. It's population is only 492 but as many as 15,000 tourists visit per day during the summer months.
This restaurant was our lunch spot at the Hotel Iroquois. We had a fantastic view all around from the flowers to the blue, clear water!
The hotel was really charming and very picturesque.
Transportation on the island is by horse, bike, or foot! Motorized vehicles have been prohibited on the island since 1898. Bicycles are everywhere!
Fudge shops are everywhere in this area. It is its own industry and one of the top 5 industries of the city.
The Governor's summer house is at the top of the hill in the photo below.
The immediate "downtown" area of Mackinac Island reminded us of an authentic version of the streets of Disney Land. Many of the buildings date to the 1800's.
We always enjoy our visits to local churches.
Other than walk around the town the premier thing to do to see the island is to rent a bike and ride around the perimeter which is 8.2 miles long. So that is what we did and enjoyed all the scenery.
Oscar and Benny came on the adventure with us so Doug rented a pet carrier too! Yes, that's a horse and buggy available for rent with or without a driver.
Look at how clear the water is! Put a palm tree out there and you would think we were in Key West.
I can see why so many people visit the island. It is just gorgeous at this time of the year.
