Virginia - Norfolk and Hampton
Norfolk, VA
After spending 2 peaceful days in the Dismal Swamp Canal we once again entered the big water and all its glory. You come out of the swamp near Norfolk and turn North. This railroad lift bridge was our first clue that we were back in civilization.
Norfolk is full of US Navy warships; aircraft carriers, destroyers, submarines, etc. All are heavily guarded on land and on the water outside of their berths. We passed many gunboats protecting the water around the ships.
We also got to see the 122 foot two-masted wooden schooner Virginia.
While in Norfolk, we also went to see the battleship Wisconsin.
Hampton, VA - Downtown Hampton Public Pier
At this marina the dockmaster keeps a garden for all the guests to enjoy. He has three kinds of potatoes, multiple kinds of lettuce, herbs, cucumbers, tomatoes, etc. It was nice to get really fresh produce for FREE!
Hampton, as with most places along the Chesapeake Bay, has a rich history.
This is a beautifully restored 1920 carousel. One of only 200 antique carousels still in the US. It has it's original mirrors and 48 differently decorated and positioned horses.
It seems like we are in constant planning mode. This is one of those meetings. At this point we were making our way north through the Chesapeake Bay and we planned our next several stops along the way. We make a pretty good team when we all pool our resources.
After our planning meeting we treated ourselves to Sunday brunch in downtown Hampton.
