Morgan City

Today was a very uneventful day on the water.....just the way we like it!!  We left Delcambre around 7 and headed into the rising sun.  Traveling east early in the morning provides a double whammy. Sure, the sun is in your eyes the whole way. But secondly you also have the reflection of the sun from the water to contend with. We used a throwable PFD to help shade us from the glare. Got suntans on our cheeks!

The winds were very light and it turned out to be a beautiful day.  Around 8:30 T-boy called to make sure we got off alright and that we were ok.  What a wonderful kind soul!!

T-boy was concerned about the low water level in the marina this morning. Above is a photo taken from our boat showing the other side of the dock we were tied to. The north wind, as it does in many places along the Gulf Coast, blows all of the water away from the inland shores. In this case, leaving only a mud bottom behind. Fortunately, our side of the dock had about 4 1/2 feet of water when we left. Second Wave needs 3 feet 8 inches to float so we left just in time.

The picture above is of a Cable Ferry. A cable to connected beneath the water from one shore to the other. The Ferry pulls itself along the cable to transport people or equipment across the GICW. Boaters have to be sure that the cable has settled well below the surface before crossing the pathway of the Ferry. If not, a new propeller may be in your future.

We travelled 51.6 miles today and arrived at Morgan City Pleasure dock around 3.  Although this dock is very convenient from the GICW, there sure is a lot of traffic noise from the 2 bridges just ahead of us.

We took a walk into the downtown area of Morgan City to find a Soul Food restaurant called Rita Mae's. It had been recommended to us by the Mayor. That, and it was the only restaurant within walking distance that was open at the time we were looking.

At Rita Mae's, everything is made from scratch. Ms. Rita is almost 80 but still bakes the dessert pies herself.
