Solomon's Island, MD

Solomons Island,  Maryland

There were numerous marinas in Back Creek in a very sheltered area and we stayed at Calvert's marina with just under 10 other Looper boats over the Memorial Day weekend. Several slip holders maintained this garden above the marina.

Below is a diving bell which is a rigid chamber used to transport divers from the surface to a desired depth and back in open water, usually to perform underwater work.  This was up in the marina parking lot (no divers inside).

After arriving in Solomon's we decided to drop the dinghy and explore Back Creek.  There wasn't much within walking distance from our marina but if we dinghied across the creek there were many restaurants to choose from.  Below is Meg and George who we have been traveling with for a while now.

Found this restaurant, The Charles Street Brasserie, that didn't disappoint.

Dinghies tied up outside the restaurant.  Glad we are still able to climb up and down high and low places without issues, yet!

Again we dinghied over to the Calvert Marine Museum and the Drum Point Lighthouse. The lighthouse was moved to its waterfront location in 1975.

The Drum Point Lighthouse in pictured below.

The Lighthouse was a functioning navigational aid to mariners. But, it also was home to the Lighthouse Keeper and his family. As such it had full living accommodations including bedrooms, kitchen, a coal burning stove/heater and a workshop. Yes, that's the toilet inside and yes, it "drops" directly overboard from the Lighthouse. Fortunately, its no longer in service.

There was also a wooden boat shop at the museum. There they build and repair the boats on display (and in use) at the marina. They were working on this canoe when we were there.

The shop is staffed with an all volunteer crew. Several are recognized below for their years of service.

The guy below has caused us many stressful moments on the water, particularly in rough seas while looking directly into the sun.

Back over at Calverts Marina a short distance away, was this figurine entitled "On Watch". He's looking out over the point and watching and listening as to warn others of danger or an attack.

Meeting space where we planned our continued journey up the Chesapeake.
